Yorkshire Day 2024 is an annual celebration that honours the region of Yorkshire in the UK. And while we’re definitely biased, there’s a whole host of great things to commemorate about our little corner of the world. Here’s what you need to know:
Date: Yorkshire Day is always observed on August 1. The event was first celebrated officially in 1985.
Location: The main celebrations will take place in the historic city of York this year.
History: The event commemorates the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which was passed during the British Empire. Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce played a significant role in campaigning for this act. The day also coincides with the regimental anniversary of the Battle of Minden. While Yorkshire Day was initially founded as a form of protest against local government reforms in the early 1970’s, it’s evolved into a celebration of the county’s beautiful scenery, bountiful historic monuments and picturesque towns and cities. And, it goes without saying, our food and farming heritage.
Traditions: Towns and cities across Yorkshire host civic gatherings and the Yorkshire flag is raised to mark the occasion.
As a proud family run Yorkshire business, we are delighted that in 2024, the official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration will be held in the city of York, just down the road from Herb Fed’s hometown of Easingwold!
The event includes a breakfast gathering, a street parade of Yorkshire’s Mayors, a special thanks-giving service at York Minster and a formal civic lunch hosted by the Lord Mayor of York.
To help celebrate Yorkshire Day, Herb Fed ran a free prize draw during the first week of August with the chance to win a win a fabulous Yorkshire Hamper filled with locally sourced goodies!
We’re delighted to announce the winner of the hamper is Noah H. Congratulations and we hope you enjoyed all the hamper’s delicious products!
