Burger Day

What is a Burger?

The earliest version of a foodstuff we would recognize as a burger can be found during the 1st century A.D. in Rome. This was a ground minced meat dish prepared with pine nuts, peppers and wine. It then took more than 1,200 years until the Mongols started tenderizing meat so that it can be eaten on the go; useful in their nomadic lifestyle.

The modern version of the burger that we eat today was only created around the late 19th century. In 1885 at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York the Menches brothers used beef in their sandwiches, which they called ‘Hamburgers’.

A burger is a sandwich consisting of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a sliced bread roll or bun. The patty may be fried, grilled, or smoked. Burgers are often served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, bacon, or chiles. Burgers can also be made without meat (veggie burgers), or with fish, poultry, or other ingredients.

Different Types of Burger

There are many different types of burgers, and the possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to toppings and fillings. Some of the most popular burgers include:

The classic cheeseburger: A cheeseburger is a burger topped with cheese. The cheese is usually American cheese, cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, or Pepper Jack cheese.
The bacon cheeseburger: A bacon cheeseburger is a cheeseburger with bacon added.
The double cheeseburger: A double cheeseburger is a burger with two beef patties and two slices of cheese.
The mushroom Swiss burger: A mushroom Swiss burger is a burger topped with mushrooms and Swiss cheese.
The Western bacon cheeseburger: A Western bacon cheeseburger is a bacon cheeseburger topped with barbecue sauce and onion rings.
The sliders: Sliders are small burgers that are perfect for appetizers or snacks. They are usually served on mini buns with all the fixings of a regular burger.

Whether you like your burgers plain or stacked high with all the toppings, there’s no denying that this classic dish is one of the most delicious ways to enjoy a nice piece of meat.
