Our four-week-old birds arrive in small flocks – when feathered and able to venture outdoors they follow their instinct to roam and forage freely in fifty acres of Yorkshire countryside.
Our commitment to time-honored, regenerative farming ensures a healthy and natural environment for our free range chickens, allowing them to grow at a natural, slower pace. By prioritising traditional farming methods, we create the ideal conditions for our birds to thrive.
We focus on smaller flocks of free range chickens, which reduces stress on both the birds and the land, promoting healthier living spaces and improved animal welfare. Our meadows are carefully managed, with sections left unmown to support biodiversity. Beehives are placed strategically to encourage the growth of wildflowers and clover, further boosting the ecosystem and helping to lower our carbon footprint.
Our free range chickens live as nature intended—dust-bathing, grazing on the land, and enjoying the sunshine (or rain). This natural lifestyle ensures the highest welfare standards, resulting in chickens with a rich depth of flavour and a beautifully tender texture, providing a truly exceptional dining experience.
Our free range chickens enjoy a distinctive, sustainable diet that includes seasonal herbs. Twice a week, we gather bundles of about ten varieties of herbs from Edward’s aunt and cousins’ farm in the nearby village of Sand Hutton. This practice not only reduces waste by using surplus herbs, which can range from chillies to salad greens, but also enriches our chickens’ environment.
Feeding our free range chickens with herbs adds nutritional value and
stimulates their natural instincts as they peck through the aromatic varieties. This herb-based diet is combined with a balanced, additive-free cereal sourced from a local mill. Additionally, our free range chickens forage for grass and insects, enjoying the fruits of the land.
This thoughtful combination of herbs, cereal, and natural foraging ensures our free range chickens are healthy and content, resulting in birds with exceptional flavour and quality.
Whilst our birds don’t actually taste of herbs, we believe that their unmatched herb-based diet enhances the natural flavour of the meat and adds an extra dimension to the taste; this coupled with the highest possible animal welfare standards, results in a flavour that is hard to beat.
This hasn’t gone unnoticed as our distinctive birds now boast their very own hall of fame, ten awards and counting!
