Christmas Rooster
A Christmas Rooster makes a brilliant alternative to turkey. We produce them just once a year - and once you've tried one, you'll understand why they sell out.
Akin to Capons, our Roosters are named as such because the term Capon refers to a caponised bird - a practice not carried out in this country. What you get instead is a cock bird, slow-grown and herb-fed, with a flavour that's distinctly its own.
The Birds: Try A Christmas Rooster
Our cock birds arrive at four weeks - feathered, lively, and ready for the outdoors. They're housed in small flocks in our mobile arcs, hand-bedded every night, and kept well away from unwanted visitors.
Able to roam and forage as their instincts dictate, they're fed a delicious mix of additive-free cereal and herb off-cuts - making mealtimes not just nutritious but genuinely interesting, as they peck away morning, noon and night.
The Herbs
Twice a week, seasonal herb off-cuts from Sand Hutton are delivered into miniature hayracks alongside their cereal. Chillies, mint, salad greens - a wide and varied mix, chosen not just for nutrition but to keep the birds stimulated and happy.
Combined with their cereal diet and the grass and insects they forage throughout the day, it makes for healthy, contented birds. Sustainably sourced, utterly unique.`
Christmas Roosters: The Taste
Our Roosters don't taste of herbs, but they do taste of something. Richer than a chicken, more old-fashioned in flavour! Some would say almost gamey and full of depth and character.
If you know, you know. If you've never tried one, Christmas is a very good time to start.
The Farm to Fork Journey
Our cock birds enjoy the Herb Fed experience of traditional, time-honoured and sustainable farming which puts the animal's welfare before anything else. Raised amongst their counterparts, and enjoying the fat of the land during the day and a cosy warm hut at night, the birds have a contented time in the lead up to Christmas.
It is at this point, having been grown slowly to reach maturity naturally, that they are processed at a local abattoir, before returning to our SALSA and FSA approved processing unit, to be hand finished and packed by our skilled team of butchers. Each of our birds are individually boxed and come with giblets for the best gravy.
Herb Fed Poultry are advocates of excellent animal husbandry which results in happy and healthy birds, and this combined with a unique and nutritious diet and the right to follow their natural instincts - dust bathing, grazing and foraging day in day out - makes for a bird of taste. Whilst we are a growing family business, we still hand rear our small flock of birds in the very same way, guaranteeing the very best care and attention to their welfare. The highest possible animal welfare standards are maintained, and we enhance our roosters' diets with fresh herbs, which makes our special bird's flavour extremely hard to beat.
