Why Choose Free-Range Birds?

At Herb Fed Poultry, we often get asked: “What’s the big deal with free-range birds?”
Well, the short answer? Everything.

We’re a small family-run farm based in Yorkshire, and we’ve built our business around one simple belief: when animals are treated well, the food tastes better – and you can feel better about eating it.

So in this blog, we’re diving into the cluckin’ marvellous world of free-range poultry: what it really means, why it matters, and why your Sunday roast deserves nothing less.

What Does “Free-Range” Actually Mean?

Let’s bust a myth straight away.
“Free-range” doesn’t just mean chickens or turkeys go outside sometimes. It means they have:

  • Access to open pasture daily
  • Space to roam, scratch, peck, and do what birds naturally do
  • Shelter, warmth, and protection when they need it
  • Enrichment that keeps them happy and healthy

At Herb Fed Poultry, our birds don’t just get access to the outdoors – they get lush Yorkshire pasture, and enjoy a unique diet that includes over 10 varieties of fresh herbs.

Why Free-Range Poultry Tastes Better

You can genuinely taste the difference.

Because free-range birds grow at a natural pace and have plenty of exercise, the meat has a deeper flavour and better texture and time to mature naturally. The result – beautifully tender, naturally juicy meat that doesn’t shrink in the pan.

Slower growing = better meat

At Herb Fed, we let our birds grow slower than intensively reared poultry. No rushing. No artificial growth promotion. Just happy, healthy birds growing at nature’s pace.

It’s All About High Welfare (And Happy Birds)

We believe happy birds = better birds.

Here’s what high welfare means to us:

  • Plenty of space to roam
  • A small flock environment – no crowding and competition for feed which can stress the birds.
  • Natural daylight and fresh air every day
  • Clean, comfy housing at night
  • A diet enriched with fresh herbs
  • Handling with care and respect throughout their lives

Fun Free-Range Facts

  1. Chickens can recognise over 100 different faces – which means they know their flock-mates (and their favourite humans!).
  2. Turkeys love to play – ours enjoy exploring and flapping about in the pasture.
  3. Herbs improve health – fresh herbs like parsley and oregano not only taste great but support natural gut health in poultry.
  4. Free-range farming improves biodiversity – our fields attract bees, butterflies, and wild birds thanks to low-impact farming methods.
  5. Exercise builds flavour – birds that walk, flap and forage develop better muscle tone = more delicious meat.

Is Free-Range Better for the Environment?

Yes – when done right.
Free-range farming on a small scale, like ours at Herb Fed Poultry, is more sustainable than intensive farming. Here’s why:

  • Our flocks are rotated across pasture, which helps the land regenerate
  • The birds’ natural foraging habits reduce waste and support healthy soil
  • Our low-input, herb-based diet reduces reliance on processed feed
  • We support local supply chains and keep our carbon footprint low

Supporting farms like ours helps preserve the countryside and promote sustainable agriculture that’s kinder to the planet.

What do some terms actually mean?

Not all free-range poultry is created equal.
Some supermarket “free-range” birds may only get minimal outdoor access or spend most of their lives indoors with thousands of others.

Free range – Access to open pasture daily and space to roam, scratch, peck, and do what birds naturally do.

Barn reared – Chickens are kept indoors but not caged. They have limited space and not able to behave as they would naturallys.

Intensive poultry rearing – Large modern poultry houses with climate-controlled structures and artificial light. Regular vaccinations to maintain flock health. Highly efficient but not a natural environment for birds. Large flock size means competition for food increasing stress.

At Herb Fed, our free-range really means free — open air, real pasture, and loads of space to roam and forage naturally.
